Welcome to the first lesson in the Getting Started With StumbleUpon
crash course. Over the next few days you will receive several lessons
that will help you learn the ins and outs of using the social bookmarking
community StumbleUpon to get more traffic and exposure for your
In this first lesson let’s talk a little about what StumbleUpon is, how it
functions and how to get started using it right away.
StumbleUpon is one of the leading social networking sites, used by
thousands of people across the globe, and for that reason it shouldn’t
be ignored, especially if you’re looking for a great no-cost way to drive
traffic to your website, blog or other webpages online.
Becoming a member of StumbleUpon is both free and easy. All you
have to do is visit StumbleUpon.com where you can either join using
your email address or log in with your Facebook account.
After you create an account you will prompted to select your interests
and find your friends within the StumbleUpon network. You will also
have the option to download the StumbleUpon toolbar or use one of the
available apps that they provide to make stumbling an easy and fun
experience for their members.
Here’s a quick link to the StumbleUpon download page:
As a member of StumbleUpon, you will have access to the community
known as ‘stumblers’ where you will be able to rate websites, video
clips, articles, photos and more.
The StumbleUpon platform is based on a recommendation powered
system, where members visit (stumble) through websites and rate them
according to their likes and dislikes. The more ‘like’ stumbles a website
receives the more popular it will become and in turn the more traffic and
exposure on the network it will receive.
As with any social networking site need to take time to fill out your
profile, so that you can take full advantage of everything that
StumbleUpon has to offer its members.
You’ll find the link to your profile in the upper right hand corner of the
StumbleUpon homepage immediately after you login to your account.
Under the profile tab you will be able to add your personal information
as well as a brief description that will be used as your public profile.
From there you will also be able to change your stumble settings, add a
profile picture, manage your privacy settings, passwords, emails and
connect your StumbleUpon account with other accounts such as
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn among others.
One of the things that make StumbleUpon so much fun for its members
is that you can find interesting content that you may have never found
otherwise. Not only can you stumble through various websites
also explore the different channels on the network to find topics that you
are interested in.
So if you don’t have a StumbleUpon account yet, your assignment for
this lesson is to go sign up for one right away. Then begin exploring the
different options and features available so that you can become familiar
with how this social network functions.
We have a lot to go over in the next few days if you want to learn how to
use StumbleUpon to your advantage, so be sure to look for your next
lessons soon. We will be discussing some of the main benefits of using
StumbleUpon to get more traffic and exposure for your website.
It’s time for your second lesson in the Getting Started With
StumbleUpon crash course. I hope you found lesson one informative
and now have a better understanding of how StumbleUpon functions. I
also hope you have taken time to set up your own StumbleUpon
account and customize your profile.
In today’s lesson we’re going to talk about some of the main methods
associated with using StumbleUpon to get more traffic and exposure
for your website.
In my humble opinion StumbleUpon is one of the easiest social
networks to get started with. It literally only takes a few minutes to
create an account, customize your profile, download and install your
chosen toolbar or app and begin taking advantage of this popular
Let’s quickly go over some of the main benefits of using StumbleUpon:
- You can quickly bookmark your favorite websites
This includes adding your own website or blog to the network giving you
the ability to increase the visibility of your webpages and drive traffic
directly to them.
- Build your own network of stumbler’s
These stumbler’s can help you propel your content up the ranks in the
StumbleUpon network and increase your visibility quickly. Just be sure
that you provide them with plenty of good content and reciprocate their
goodwill by stumbling their content too. This will help ensure that your
network continues to grow!
- They can help you establish online credibility
The StumbleUpon rating system gives its members the ability to rate
content and leave comments. By taking the time to leave helpful, well
thought out comments you can build your credibility and establish
yourself as an authority in your marketplace within the StumbleUpon
- It’s a user driven platform that can be used to increase the exposure
When used properly, StumbleUpon can be a great way to increase
exposure to your website or blog. Its user driven platform gives
members the ability to like or dislike your webpages, so by providing
high-quality content you can propel your website up through the ranks
and potentially put it in front of the 8 million plus StumbleUpon users.
- It’s a great source of free traffic
There’s no doubt that the more website visitors you have the better your
chances are of increasing your income. By listing your website on the
StumbleUpon network and encouraging stumbler’s to give it a thumbs
up you can literally increase your traffic overnight.
- It’s an excellent way to promote your brand

brand. Once your webpages are in the StumbleUpon system and being
positively ranked by stumbler’s around the world you will no doubt enjoy
the benefit of increased visitors and brand recognition.
- It can help boost the page rank for your website or blog
Having good page rank can help you drive your website to the first
page of the search results, which in turn will increase your website
traffic. Once your webpages are listed on StumbleUpon and members
begin stumbling it can create an unlimited supply of back links to your
site helping to increase its visibility and page rank.
- It can be used to spy on your competitors
By looking at the number of thumbs up and thumbs down reviews on
StumbleUpon you can keep a close eye on your competitors, What
they’re up to and whether or not their customers like what they have to
offer helping you gain instant insight into your marketplace.

be an excellent vehicle to get people talking about and sharing your

about stumbling, sharing and adding your own pages to the
Again, I appreciate your joining me for this short ecourse. If you have
any questions or need any assistance please feel free to contact me at
anytime. I will be glad to help.
Today we are going to talk more
about stumbling, sharing and adding your own pages to the
We have learned so far that the only things you need to start stumbling
is an account and an Internet connection. Then it’s as simple as logging
in and clicking the stumble button in the top left corner of your
StumbleBar. Just be careful stumbling can be addictive!
We’ve also learned that it’s important to take time to customize your
profile, and select your Interests before you begin stumbling.
Once you begin using StumbleUpon you will quickly discover that you
can start stumbling from several other places too, for instance you can
click a web page shown on a member’s profile or one of the Interest
thumbnails on your Home page or Profile page.
All you have to do is click directly on the image or hover over it to have
the option of sharing it or leaving a comment, by clicking on either the
arrow or talk bubble icon.
You can also re-visit any of the web pages you’ve previously Stumbled
on StumbleUpon by going to your Profile page and clicking the “History”
tab. From there you can share or your past stumbles on other social
networks or leave additional comments. StumbleUpon does not allow
you to delete your history from your profile, but your history is completely
private and cannot be seen by other members of the StumbleUpon
When it comes to sharing webpages you like on StumbleUpon it’s just
as easy. All you have to do is click the share button on your StumbleBar
and you will be given the option to share the webpage you’re on with all
of your contacts, a few specific contacts or by email. You will also be
given the option of including a message and posting your share on
other social networks, like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
The real key to harnessing the power of the StumbleUpon for your
own purposes is the “Add a new page” feature. It allows you to add your
own webpages to the StumbleUpon index for other stumbler’s to see.
To begin adding pages simply go to your profile page and click on the
add a page link in the bottom left column. From there you will be able to
include your unique URL, add keyword tags and write a comment.
StumbleUpon does allow you to add multiple pages, but beware adding
multiple pages from a single domain can be considered spamming and
can lead to your account being suspended or even terminated. So
always use your best judgment and only add key pages from your
domain that are specifically targeted to inform and entice stumbler’s to
click that (I like it) button.
Another good thing to keep in mind when adding pages to
StumbleUpon is to make sure that they load quickly. Slow loading
pages will simply get stumbled across, instead of stumbled on.
If you’re trying to reach your market with a specific goal in mind it’s a
good idea to create a page specifically designed to attract the attention
Try to keep your design clean, fast loading and with a clear call to
action. For instance if you’ve written a great article about a dog training
product that you are recommending, don’t load the entire article page
into the StumbleUpon network, because stumbler’s often won’t take the
time to read it. Instead create a specific page with your best headline,
brief overview and a link that says “click here” to find out more. Be sure
to make it enticing and inspiring to get your fellow stumbler’s to take
When you are using StumbleUpon to try and get more traffic to your
website you always want to keep in mind that was created to help
people share and discover interesting content, not to promote products
and services, so be sure that the pages you submit are providing real
value to the network.
If you do have a commercial webpage that you would like to promote on
StumbleUpon they have a paid discovery service where you are
allowed to submit those pages. We will be talking more about that in
They also offer Channels as a service for brands, celebrities, and
domains where you can add your commercial content so that
Stumblers who actively choose to follow you can see it. This is another
powerful tool that you can take advantage of from within the
That’s it for today’s lesson. In your next lesson we will be talking about
why it’s important to categorize your content properly when adding new
pages to the StumbleUpon network.
Well, we are winding down to the end of this short
course, but we still need to go over a few things that will help you be
able to take full advantage of everything that your StumbleUpon account
has to offer.
Today we are going to jump right in and talk about why it’s important
to categorize your content properly when adding new pages to the
When it comes to adding new webpages to the StumbleUpon network
there are three main reasons why choosing the proper category is
1. Proper Distribution
Whenever you log into your StumbleUpon account and add a new page
from your file have one of the first questions you will have to answer is
“What is this page about?” You will be presented with a drop-down box
that allows you to choose from a multitude of different topics posted on
the StumbleUpon network.
The interest that you select helps determine who your page will be seen
by when they are stumbling through the network. By taking the time to
correctly categorize your webpage you will be much more likely to
reach your target audience.
For instance, if you have a webpage that helps people learn how to
brew a perfect cup of coffee you will want to choose ‘Coffee” as your
topic of interest. This will ensure that your page will be stumbled by
users that are specifically subscribed to that interest. Whereas, if you
had picked cooking the chances of coffee lovers seeing your
webpage would be significantly reduced.
2. Gets You More Thumb Ups
By adding your page to the right category the first time it will help
ensure more that it gets more ‘Thumb’s Up” ratings, as well as more
shares and positive comments. On the other hand if you add your page
to the wrong category it will be much more likely to receive a ‘Thumb’s
Down’ ratings if it is stumbled by someone who isn’t interested in your
topic. It may also get you reported or even removed from the
3. Gets You More Traffic To Your Site
Having your webpage show up in the right category puts it in front of
targeted stumbler’s. This the best way to take advantage of the
massive amounts of traffic that StumbleUpon receives everyday.
As I mentioned above, if it’s not in the right interest, people who
stumble it may give it a Thumbs Down simply because it’s not what they
were expecting to see, it’s in the wrong category or even worse they
report it as spam.
Remember, stumbler’s have
the ability to rate your site in several ways
depending on which option they feel
best fits your page. It doesn’t just
stop with a simple Thumbs up or Thumbs down. They can choose leave
a comment or share your page with others in their StumbleUpon
network as well as on other social networking sites.
The more ‘thumb up’s’ and comments that your page gets, the more it
will be shown and the more long term exposure you will receive.
I hope today’s lesson was helpful to you. Don’t forget to keep an eye out
for my next email. There will be some great stuff in your last lesson.
Well, we have come to the final lesson in the Getting Started With
StumbleUpon crash course. I sure hope you have enjoyed your lessons
and learned a lot about how you can use StumbleUpon to your
advantage and drive more traffic to your website or blog.
In this final lesson were going to talk about StumbleUpon’s paid
discovery feature. While it’s very possible to get a nice flow of free
traffic from StumbleUpon, sometimes you just want more.
So, once you get the hang of using StumbleUpon to start generating
free traffic to your website and you want to improve your results even
further you may want to take a look at StumbleUpon’s Paid Discovery
program and see if it’s a good fit for you.
The Paid Discovery program lets you bypass the time-consuming
natural discovery and community building process and lets you get right
to the traffic.
While the Paid Discovery program is similar to Facebook Ads, with
StumbleUpon you’re not limited to a small space on the sidebar of a
page. You have your entire page put into the StumbleUpon discovery
system and shown to people who are actually interested in what you
have to offer.
thing that makes the paid discovery program different from
other pay per click or pay per view advertising programs is that it finds
users who are interested in learning about new things, while other paid
programs finds users who are looking specifically for one thing.
The paid discovery program offers three different levels of campaign
inclusion to choose from:
- The first level is their light paid discovery option.
This is a great starter package that comes with targeting, basic
reporting features and integration with Google analystics. This level
allows you to start getting traffic for as little as five cents a visitor.
- The second level is their standard paid discovery option.
It comes with a few more bells and whistles, including priority serving
advanced targeting and more detailed reporting options. It’s great for
building brand and engaging a more specific audience. it does cost a
little bit more than their light version, but you can start receiving
engaged visitors for as little as ten cents each.
- The third level is their premium paid discovery option.
This level is specifically designed for more advanced marketers who
are looking to launch products and advertising campaigns with a bang.
This level of service is slightly more expensive than the other two
options, but it guarantees top serving priority in targeted content
streams, so you can be sure your pages are being shown to the right
audience, at the right time.
To begin using StumbleUpon’s paid discovery program you will need to
create an account that is separate from your regular StumbleUpon
You can get a few more details and sign up for the paid discovery
program here: https://www.stumbleupon.com/pd
Once you activated your account you can start creating new ad
campaigns right away. Immediately after you log into your paid
discovery account you will be asked to enter a URL and choose how
many unique visitors per day you would like to receive.
After that is completed you will be taken to the campaign page where
you can edit the details of your offer. There you will be able to name
your campaign, choose up to 10 topics of interest, target your
demographics and adjust your start date, just in case you don’t want
your campaign to start immediately.
While you have the ability to make changes to any part of your
campaign that you like StumbleUpon has made it very easy to get the
ball rolling with their paid discovery program by including an auto-
optimized feature that automatically optimizes your campaigns for
you. Helping to ensure that your campaigns are shown to exactly the
right target audience.
Once your first campaign is created you will be asked to add funds to
your account and your ads will start showing as soon as they have been
approved unless you have chosen an alternative start date.
At any time you will have the ability to go to your dashboard where you
will have complete control over your account. From there you can
manage your campaigns, create additional campaigns and view
reports, so that you can track the effectiveness of your ads.
One more thing that sets StumbleUpon paid discovery apart from other
paid advertising programs is that consumers actually have the ability
engage and interact with your ad, just like with your regular
StumbleUpon account the more likes you get the better and they can
also give you a thumbs up, thumbs down, share and comment on the
quality of your content.
StumbleUpon can be a great source of traffic for any website,
especially when you learn how to tap into its full potential. However it’s
often overlooked and underutilized. So be sure that you take the time to
learn how to use it properly and you should have no problem taking full
advantage of everything that this amazing social network has to offer.
As we close this final lesson I would like to thank you again for joining
me and I sincerely hope that you have learned a lot about how to use
StumbleUpon to get more traffic to your website!
